About AcneWhat causes Acne?

What is acne?

Acne is an extremely common skin condition. It is classed as a disorder of the sebaceous glands and hair follicles. In normal operation, sebaceous glands will secrete oil to protect, lubricate and hydrate the skin. This oil will travel through the hair follicle to the skin. Acne can develop when the glands and hair follicles get clogged, most probably by dead skin cells. Certain types of bacteria can also start to multiply, leading to pimples and inflammation. This can exacerbate the problem of clogged follicles and cause a more severe form of acne.

Suitable Treatments

Acne treatments

Mild acne will most probably clear up on its own and leave no lasting trace. If your acne is worsening from mild to moderate or heading towards being severe, it is time to have it looked at by a professional. The problem with acne is that once the outbreak heals, you may be left with acne scarring, which, depending on the extent, can be hard to remove completely. Getting the acne treated, or at least looked at, earlier rather than later may reduce the chance that you suffer from scarring.

At Derma Revive Skin Clinic, we have 7 treatment options open to you to treat acne. This gives you, the patient, a far better chance of successfully treating your acne. We can offer you a range of treatment options, coupled with our extensive experience in treating acne, so we have the luxury of selecting the most effective remedy.

After a detailed consultation, where we will discuss the history of your acne and then offer what we think will work best for you, it might be the case that we suggest a two or more-pronged approach if we feel that it will give you the best results.

If you have acne and want an expert eye to have a look at it, please get in touch with us.

Causes of acne

  • Teenage acne. It is thought that teenagers may have larger sebaceous glands due to hormonal changes. This leads to more oil production, resulting in more chance of blockages and, thus, more chance of acne developing.
  • Skin and hair products. Products containing oils that come into contact with the skin may be a trigger for acne.
  • Certain drugs. Including IUDs containing drugs, certain steroids, and any medicine containing hormones that can possibly trigger or worsen acne.
  • Diet. Scientists are divided on which part of one’s diet points towards worsening or triggering acne. Salt, processed foods, fat, high glycemic foods, dairy, and others have all been suggested as culprits at one time or another. There is also the idea that consuming these foods comes at the cost of not eating healthier alternatives, such as healthy fats, vitamins and nutrient-rich foods.
  • Genetics. Some studies suggest that you are more susceptible to the development of acne if one or both of your parents do.
