 What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a fat-reducing treatment. It works by cooling fat cells in targeted areas of the body. This cooling process leads to the removal of fat cells, which are naturally processed and permanently lost. CoolSculpting does not harm surrounding tissues. It can treat various areas, including double chin, upper and lower abdomen, male chest, bra and back fat, flanks, inner and outer thighs, knees, and calves.

A quick and easy treatment

The fat-freezing treatment takes 45 minutes and has visible results in one treatment. Patients can continue normal activity immediately after treatment as there is no downtime. Results and patient experience may vary. These depend on many factors, such as age, medical history, lifestyle, and the amount of stubborn fat.

FDA Approved

We offer CoolSculpting® fat reduction treatments to reduce unwanted body fat with lasting results. It is the only FDA-approved (the only controlled cooling procedure) non-surgical fat reduction (cryolipolysis) treatment designed to freeze unwanted fat and effectively target fat cells for effective fat reduction. • Non-surgical procedure. The biggest benefit is that it is a non-invasive procedure, making it lower risk and minimal expected downtime when compared with surgical procedures like liposuction. It’s also a lot more affordable!

Freezing Fat Cells

CoolSculpting® body contouring treatments target areas of fat by freezing the fat, also known as cryolipolysis. The fat cells cannot survive under a certain temperature, and the dead cells are flushed from the body, giving the patient the desired results with no downtime or surgery and no damage to surrounding tissue or nerves. The patient can then resume normal activities.

The science behind cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis is a cutting-edge fat reduction method that has revolutionised the world of non-invasive body contouring. How does fat freezing work? This is a question often posed by patients looking to remove stubborn fat. The name ‘Coolsculpting’ literally means ‘cool sculpting’.

This technology takes a completely different approach than traditional techniques, capitalising on the fact that your fat cells are more sensitive to cold temperatures than many other skin cells. The treatment process has great advantages over traditional and less effective fat reduction methods.

Fat cells are more susceptible to cold.

Cryolipolysis relies on the principle that adipocytes (fat cells) are more susceptible to cooling than other skin cells. When precise cold temperatures are applied to the treatment area, it triggers apoptosis (cell death) in the adipocytes, which are then engulfed and digested by macrophages, a type of white blood cell. These dead cells are then disposed of by bodily processes.

The Inflammatory Process and Fat Reduction

The effects of cryolipolysis are not immediately visible. Instead, the treatment initiates an inflammatory process that starts within three days and peaks around 14 days after treatment. As the adipocytes die, they are surrounded by histiocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and other mononuclear cells. Between 14 and 30 days after treatment, macrophages and other phagocytes envelop and digest the fat cells as part of the body’s natural response to injury.

What to expect at your CoolSculpting consultation?

During the free, no-obligation CoolSculpting consultation, a senior technician will evaluate the areas you wish to treat and determine your eligibility for the treatment. They will assess the amount of pinchable fat in stubborn areas and the total number of fat cells. Then, the CoolSculpting fat-freezing treatment process will be explained in detail. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions, and there is no time limit on the consultation.

Personalised treatment plan

A customised treatment plan is drawn up. After a body assessment, we can recommend how Coolsculpting procedures might be required to achieve the desired results in the selected body area. The Derma Revive Skin Clinic offers a personalised fat-freezing treatment plan designed specifically for your exact requirements.

FDA Licensed Device

The areas licensed by the FDA to be treatable are the abdomen, flanks (aka love handles), bra fat, inner and outer thighs, back fat, upper arms, buttock rolls (also called banana rolls) and submental fat (commonly known as a double chin). The device was approved by the FDA in 2010, and in 2014, the device’s scope was expanded to include treatment of the thighs. The Coolsculpting procedure uses a special applicator to remove the fat cells. Additional areas that can be treated beyond the FDA approval are to tone knees, hips, and other stubborn fat bulges, like the mons pubis.

The Coolsculpting Procedure

CoolSculpting Fat Freezing will take 35 – 60 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. Derma Revive offers “DualSculpting”, targeting multiple treatment areas together. This, in turn, reduces the overall procedure time. The treatment takes 35-60 minutes per applicator per area to eliminate stubborn fat safely; therefore, the session time varies depending on the treated areas. The Coolsculpting procedure is a same-day treatment.

A walk-through of a Coolsculpting fat reduction procedure

While lying down, the practitioner will mark the specific areas of stubborn fat cells you want to target with a pen, using the applicators as a guide. The practitioner will place a protective gel pad over your skin and then apply an applicator to the treatment area. Your skin and fat get suctioned into the applicator, which reduces your tissue to the CoolSculpting temperature of -11ºC and allows for precisely controlled cooling. When the treatment time is complete, the practitioner will remove the applicator and massage the frozen fat to boost your body’s natural process of eliminating the dead fat cells through your lymphatic system.

CoolSculpting fat freezing targets visible fat bulges across diverse areas of the body through an innovative fat-freezing process. Body fat, whether saddle bags, mummy tummy, muffin tops, love handles or double chins, are all stubborn fat areas and can be hard to reduce despite dieting or exercise.

Who are Coolsculpting fat-freezing treatments suitable for?

Candidates with stubborn areas of fat are mostly suitable for this treatment and already have a fit and active lifestyle. Coolsculpting should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding or people with poor circulation, neuropathy, a pacemaker, or a defibrillator. Patients who have cold agglutinin disease are also not suitable. The majority of patients are perfectly suitable for the fat-freezing treatment. If you have any doubt about your suitability, maybe due to a condition or medication you are taking, please get in touch.

If you have open or infected cuts or wounds, scar tissue, eczema, dermatitis, or a rash in the treatment area, you won’t be able to have this treatment until those conditions are healed.

The Benefits of Coolsculpting

Fat freezing through Coolsculpting has many benefits over other forms of removing fat. We list a few of the benefits below.

Non-invasive treatment

Unlike surgical procedures such as liposuction, cryolipolysis is a non-invasive treatment, meaning no incisions, anaesthesia, or significant downtime is involved. This means that patients do not suffer the inconvenience and other negative connotations they may have experienced with other invasive methods of fat removal.

Minimal discomfort

Most patients experience mild discomfort during cryolipolysis, often describing the sensation as cold or tingling. There is typically no need for pain medication during or after the procedure. Fat freezing is well tolerated by the vast majority of our patients, especially when compared to surgical removal treatments.

Targeted fat reducing

Cryolipolysis treatments allow for precise targeting of specific fat deposits, making it ideal for addressing stubborn pockets of fat in various areas of the body that may be resistant to diet and exercise. Coolsculpting is directed exactly at the fat you are looking to reduce.

Gradual, natural-looking results

Because of the fact that the body eliminates the treated fat cells through a natural inflammatory process, the results of cryolipolysis develop gradually over several weeks and months. This gradual process leads to a more natural-looking outcome. You are not going to look slimmer overnight, it is more of a cumulative process over time.

No damage to the surrounding tissue

The precisely controlled and targeted cooling process used in cryolipolysis specifically targets adipocytes without harming the surrounding skin, blood vessels, or nerves.

Low risk of side effects

The non-invasive nature of cryolipolysis results in a low risk of side effects, with patients typically experiencing only temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the treatment site. Side effects tend to subside quickly following treatment.

Long-lasting results

Once the adipocytes are destroyed and eliminated from the body, they cannot regenerate. As long as a patient continues to maintain a healthy lifestyle, the fat freezing and subsequent reduction achieved through cryolipolysis can be long-lasting. However, it is essential to note that the remaining fat cells can still expand if significant weight gain occurs. This is key to the treatment. Please bear in mind that this treatment is not labelled as a ‘weight loss’ treatment, but with careful planning, you can reap the benefits.

Customisable treatment plans

The fat-freezing treatment can be tailored to meet individual needs, with multiple applicators available to address various body areas and contours. Treatment plans can be customised to achieve optimal results for each patient. Your plan is designed specifically for you, the patient. Specific treatment plans are designed for one reason: To help you achieve the goals you are looking for.

Quick treatment sessions

With each session lasting around 45 minutes or thereabouts (depending on the areas treated), cryolipolysis is a relatively quick treatment that can easily fit into a busy schedule. Additionally, since there is no downtime, patients can return to their daily activities immediately after treatment. This contrasts steeply with other fat loss procedures involving long downtime and hassle.

Benefits of fat freezing conclusion

Cryolipolysis is a groundbreaking fat-reducing technique that offers numerous advantages to the patient over traditional methods. This non-invasive, low-risk treatment provides targeted fat reduction with minimal discomfort and downtime. With gradual, natural-looking results, cryolipolysis can help patients achieve a more contoured physique and improve their self-confidence.

By investigating and understanding the science behind the innovative technology, the treatment process, and the benefits it offers, it is clear that cryolipolysis has the potential to transform the world of non-invasive body contouring and make traditional treatment processes redundant.
