Scar Revision

Scar revision surgery is a cosmetic procedure designed to minimise the appearance of a scar(s) and improve its overall aesthetic. It is performed to reduce the visibility of scars caused by injury, keloid scars, surgery, burns, acne, or other traumatic events.

Scar revision surgery aims to create a more harmonious and natural-looking skin texture, blending the scar into the surrounding,  undamaged skin.

  1. Scar Reduction: The primary goal of scar revision surgery is to minimise the appearance of scars and make them less noticeable. By improving the texture, colour, and overall quality of the scar, the surrounding healthy skin can blend more seamlessly.

  2. Self-confidence: Reducing the noticeability of scars, especially facial scar revision, can significantly improve self-esteem and confidence, as it allows individuals to feel more comfortable and less self-conscious about their visible scars.

  3. Restored functionality: In some cases, scars may restrict movement or cause discomfort. Scar revision surgery can address these issues, improving the functionality of the affected area and enhancing the overall quality of life.

  4. Customised Plan: Scar management is tailored to each individual’s unique needs. The treatment plan is customised based on the scar type, location, and patient’s goals, ensuring the most appropriate technique is employed for optimal results. Old and new scar tissue can be treated.

  5. Long-lasting results: While scars cannot be completely erased, scar revision surgery can provide long-lasting improvements in their appearance. The results can be permanent, allowing individuals to enjoy the benefits of a more aesthetically pleasing appearance of the scar.

The Scar Revision Treatment Process

Scar Consultation

The first step in surgical revision is to schedule an initial consultation with Dr Deniz or our surgical treatment coordinator. During this consultation, you will discuss your concerns and medical history, and the surgeon will evaluate the appearance of the scar(s), the surrounding skin tone, the scar formation, and the amount of subcutaneous fat to determine the most appropriate scar revision technique for your specific case.

Scar Assessment & Treatment Plan

The surgeon will assess the scar’s characteristics, such as its size, shape, depth, location, and underlying tissue quality. They will also consider your skin type and scar type (e.g., hypertrophic scars, atrophic, keloid) to determine the best approach.

At this stage, it is also determined if the scar removal will be classed as a medical treatment (I.E, you want it removed for a specific medical reason) or if you wish to improve the scar’s cosmetic appearance.

Based on this evaluation, the surgeon will develop a customised treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Scar revision techniques:

Various scar revision techniques are available in clinic, and the choice of technique depends on the scar’s characteristics and the desired outcome. Some common scar revision techniques include:

    • Surgical excision for scars

Surgical incision involves surgically removing the old scar and suturing the skin edges back together to create a less noticeable scar. This method is particularly useful for long or wide scars.

    • Laser resurfacing for scarring

Laser therapy removes damaged skin layers, promoting new collagen formation and skin regeneration. Laser resurfacing is suitable for certain types of scars, such as acne scars or superficial scars. Laser treatments do not damage adjacent tissue.

    • Injectable treatments to help with scars

In some cases, injectable treatments, such as dermal fillers or steroid injections, may be used to improve the appearance of scars. These treatments can help flatten and soften scars, making them less noticeable.

Cost of Scar Revision Surgery

Scar Revision Surgery at Derma Revive starts from £600. The final cost varies based on the scar’s complexity, the revision technique used, and any additional treatments. A detailed cost breakdown is provided during the consultation, tailored to individual needs and case specifics. This approach ensures full awareness of the investment for the surgery, with a focus on high-quality care and optimal results.

Considerations and Aftercare:

The recovery process and timeline vary depending on the various scar treatment options and revision techniques used. Your surgeon will provide specific post-operative instructions, including wound care, medication (such as cessation of herbal supplements that may increase bleeding) and follow-up appointments.

It is important to follow these instructions diligently to ensure proper healing and optimise results. While the final visible signs of the surgical procedure can take time to manifest fully, improvements in scar appearance can be noticeable within several weeks to months.
