What are Lines and Wrinkles?

These days, many different types of non-surgical treatments are available for lines and wrinkles. Very effective options are available to you if you have mild, moderate, or even severe wrinkles. The question is, which one would work best for your particular lines and wrinkles? This is a question we aim to answer at Derma Revive Skin Clinic. The following list of treatments are all used to combat facial wrinkles.

Treatments for lines and wrinkles

Dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers, containing the bio-compatible substance Hyaluronic acid, are a very effective method of filling lines and wrinkles in the mid and lower facial areas. They work to soften and smooth out wrinkles and add volume where it has been lessened. We only use the best dermal fillers on the market here at Derma Revive Skin Clinic.

Anti-wrinkle injections. Containing botulinum type A, these injections are a very safe and effective way to decrease wrinkles. First marketed as Botox® over 30 years ago, they have become the go-to treatment for many people seeking to reduce the appearance of their lines and wrinkles. They work by temporarily paralysing certain muscles in the face to stop wrinkles from forming.

Peels. Chemical peels don’t just work to even out tones and textures. They have the added benefit of reducing facial lines and wrinkles. A patient would not have a peel to reduce deeper wrinkles, but they do show effects for finer lines.

Laser skin resurfacing. As with peels, this treatment will work to standardise tones and textures and also to tighten skin. It aims to encourage new skin growth with less pigmentation and fewer lines and wrinkles. It can also help with the fading of scars.

Microneedling. This treatment is often called collagen induction therapy. Microneedling causes micro-damage to the skin to stimulate collagen production. The result is a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

Profhilo. Profhilo is a unique type of treatment. It uses a thinner version of hyaluronic acid to add volume and increase the skin’s production of collagen and elastin. It is a longer-lasting treatment to boost the skin’s appearance and gives overall results across a wider area of the face. Profhilo was lauded as ‘the anti-wrinkle treatment’ of 2019 by the Times newspaper.

Thermage. This is a fantastically effective collagen-stimulating treatment. It uses radio frequency energy to promote collagen production deeper within the skin. It has longer-lasting effects than other collagen stimulation therapies and can be used on many parts of the body.

Why do lines and wrinkles appear?

There are 5 main reasons scientists think lines and wrinkles form. It is likely that no single factor will be entirely responsible. I will be a combination of some or all of the following causes.

  • The Sun. If you need another reason to keep fastidiously applying sunscreen, this is it: As external factors go, UV rays are the number one cause of lines and wrinkles. So if you wish to slow down the formation of lines and wrinkles, forgo the tan.
  • Ageing. Cells start to divide more slowly, and some will stop dividing completely. Collagen and elastin will start to degrade, and production will slow down. Skin will start to lose its ability to stay hydrated. The skin, as an organ, will generally become less efficient.
  • Facial expressions. Wrinkles formed by repeated movements are known as dynamic wrinkles. Examples of these are wrinkles created from smiling, squinting, and frowning.
  • Pollutants. Many chemicals in smoke, soot, dust, and gases have a bearing on proteins within the skin. These chemicals can enter the pores and indirectly cause lines and wrinkles, affecting collagen structure.
  • Bad habits. It is thought that smoking damages existing collagen and also reduces the levels of new collagen being made in the skin. Alcohol consumption depletes vitamin stores which in turn can inhibit collagen production.
