What causes Milia?

What is Milia?

Milia is the technical term for small, pearly white bumps. They are superficial and most on the face, especially under the eyes. Though milia are not harmful, these frustrating bumps are incredibly stubborn.

It’s important to note that Milia are not spots (whiteheads), although they do look similar. Milia do not go red or become inflamed-like spots because they are found on drier areas of your skin, such as eyelids and are solid lumps of dead skin.

The good news is that we can remove these unsightly blemishes on your skin and advise you to prevent them from happening again. Derma Revive Skin Clinic’s skin specialists can extract/remove milia simply and safely.

What causes Milia?

Milia is caused by a build-up of dead skin cells that have not shed properly and cause damage to the skin. This can be caused by a number of reasons, including:

  • Sun damage
  • Skin resurfacing treatments such as Dermabrasion
  • Burns to the skin
  • Excessive use of steroid creams
  • Natural ageing as the skin loses some of its exfoliation properties
